Overheating on a used car · causes and what to check

Overheating is the fault most likely to turn a cheap car into a scrapped one. It is also one of the easiest to spot in ten minutes if you know where to look.

What it usually means

  • Temperature climbing in traffic but fine on the move · fan or thermostat.

  • Mayonnaise-coloured oil filler cap or sweet smell from the exhaust · head gasket territory.
  • Repeated top-ups mentioned in service history · treat as unresolved until proven.

How to check it on the forecourt

  1. 01Cold engine: open the expansion tank and check the level and the colour of the coolant.
  2. 02Sit in traffic or idle for ten minutes and watch the gauge and the cooling fan cutting in.
  3. 03Look for staining or crust around hoses, the water pump and the radiator corners.
  4. 04Squeeze the top hose when warm · rock hard usually means pressure where it should not be.
