The 1.8-litre Valvematic petrol is the optimal choice for most UK buyers. It avoids the DPF and EGR complications associated with the 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre D-4D diesels, especially given the typical short-journey profile of a school-run MPV. The later BMW-sourced 1.6-litre diesel is efficient but still requires regular motorway runs.
All AR20 Verso engines, including the 1.6 and 1.8 Valvematic petrols and the various D-4D diesels, utilise timing chains rather than rubber cambelts. These are designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle and have no scheduled replacement intervals. However, ensure the vehicle has a comprehensive oil service history to prevent premature chain stretch.
The AR20 is generally robust electrically, but the Toyota Touch 2 touchscreen system on later models is prone to freezing or rebooting.
